The flywheel’s function
The flywheel, a disc-shaped part with a large moment of inertia, acts like an energy memory. For four-stroke engines, every four piston strokes work, that is, only the work stroke is used, and the exhaust, intake and compression of the three strokes consume work. Therefore, the torque of the crankshaft output to the outside world changes periodically, and the crankshaft speed is unstable. To improve this situation, a flywheel is installed at the rear of the crankshaft.
Flywheels have a large moment of inertia. Because the work of each cylinder of the engine is discontinuous, the engine speed is also variable. When the engine speed increases, the kinetic energy of the flywheel increases, and the energy is stored; When the engine speed is reduced, the flywheel kinetic energy is reduced, releasing the energy. Flywheels can be used to reduce speed fluctuations during engine operation.
