Function of differential half shaft bolts
1.Torque output by the differential is first transmitted to the half-shaft. The end of the half-shaft (via a flange or spline fit) attaches to the wheel hub, and the half-shaft stud passes through the mounting holes of both components, secured with a nut and lock washer to form a gap-free rigid connection.
2.Torque is transferred to the hub through the shear force and tensile force of the stud, ultimately driving the wheel to rotate and propel the vehicle (equivalent to the "final fastening bridge for power transmission").
3.Key Requirement: The stud must be made of high-strength material (typically 8.8-grade or 10.9-grade high-strength alloy) to prevent shear, deformation, or fracture due to excessive torque during power transmission.
2.Fixing Function: The preload generated by tightening the nut tightly adheres the half-shaft flange to the hub, eliminating gaps. This prevents relative displacement during driving (especially during acceleration, braking, or turning), avoiding transmission impact and component wear.
1.Torque Load: Rotational torque during power transmission exerts shear force on the stud (a force attempting to shear the stud);
2. Axial Load: Thrust/tension during vehicle startup and braking, as well as axial movement of the wheel, exert tensile force on the stud (a force attempting to pull the stud out);
3. Radial Load: Centrifugal force when turning and impact force on bumpy roads are transmitted to the stud through the hub, generating radial pressure;
4. Anti-Loosening Requirement: To withstand frequent load changes, the stud is usually paired with a lock nut (with nylon insert or cotter pin) or lock washer to prevent loosening during driving. Loose studs can cause hub wobble, leading to severe consequences such as wheel vibration, abnormal noise, or even wheel detachment.
