The function of the middle cylinder assembly

1. Supporting core moving components
   
   
   The main body of the cylinder block assembly is the cylinder block. The cylinder bores inside it act as tracks for the reciprocating linear motion of pistons. Meanwhile, the crankcase integrated into the cylinder block is used to mount and secure the crankshaft, providing support for the crankshaft’s rotational movement. In addition, it offers mounting datums for key moving parts such as connecting rods and balance shafts, ensuring precise movement trajectories of all components and preventing interference or wear.
2. Forming sealed working chambers
   
   
   The cylinder block, in conjunction with components like the cylinder head and pistons, jointly encloses the engine’s combustion chambers and sealed crankcase space. The airtightness of the combustion chamber is a prerequisite for the compression, combustion, and expansion work of the combustible mixture; a loss of sealing will lead to reduced power and increased fuel consumption. The sealing of the crankcase prevents engine oil leakage and balances the pressure inside the case in coordination with the crankcase ventilation system.
3. Withstanding and distributing mechanical and thermal loads
   
   
   During engine operation, lateral pressure from pistons on cylinder walls, torsional force generated by crankshaft rotation, and impact force from mixture combustion are all transmitted to the cylinder block assembly. It must have sufficient rigidity and strength to bear these loads and avoid deformation. At the same time, a large amount of heat from combustion is transferred through the cylinder walls, and the water channels (in water-cooled engines) or cooling fins (in air-cooled engines) inside the cylinder block can dissipate this heat, maintaining the engine’s normal operating temperature and preventing component failure due to overheating.
4. Integrating mounting interfaces for auxiliary systems
   
   
   The cylinder block assembly is also pre-equipped with mounting interfaces for auxiliary systems such as the oil pump, oil filter, water pump, and timing system (e.g., timing chain/belt tensioners and guides). This achieves an integrated layout of the engine’s various systems, ensuring the stable operation of lubrication, cooling, valve timing, and other systems, thereby maintaining the overall operational coordination of the engine.
